Rolling, rolling, rolling!

Over the last couple of weeks Ellie’s been rolling everywhere, I can’t leave her for a second! She’s still getting her arm trapped underneath her and gets very cross with herself.

It seems crazy that in just 24 weeks, this tiny baby has now started wriggling and moving all over the place.  Once she starts crawling the boys will have a good reason to tidy away their lego – highly edible!

Talking of food, we’re in our third week of weaning and have tried loads of veg, apple and pear. But now poor girl is really bunged up and hasn’t gone properly for a couple of weeks – would love to know if any of our followers have a good cure? I’ve heard that cutting out baby rice and bananas helps.  We’ve even tried prunes but they didn’t help either.  I guess we’ll be off to the docs if it doesn’t improve..

We’re still breastfeeding and Ellie’s hands are very fidgety – grabbing my hair, fiddling with my bra strap!  She’s also getting very distracted and not really feeding properly.  I’m just starting to cut back on the lunchtime feed, then I guess the next one to go will be the tea time feed.  Actually feeling a little sad that soon she’ll be weaned and I’ll no longer be a milking machine!  Have loved every minute of the breastfeeding (and I never thought I’d say that).

As for sleeping, grrr…! We’re now up between 3 and 5 am, but am trying not to give in and instead giving Ellie a bottle of warm water with just one scoop..I reckon she just might be getting hungrier and will perhaps try her on some cereal at tea time.. will keep you posted to see if this helps.

We’re off to Spain in 3 weeks (having nightmares about packing for five people), and there’s a few handy baby bits I’ve bought – a portable squashy high chair, a travel Grobag (you can strap them into the buggy / car seat whilst still in their Grobag, am hoping to get Ellie asleep before we go out!!?) and a little ‘Sleep Sheep’ – a cute little sheep that straps to the cot and plays lovely sounds like the ocean and a heartbeat.  So..Operation Packing here we come – wish me luck! :)

We’re weaning…hello mess!

Oooo this weaning lark’s so confusing!! Yes I know I did it twice before, but  a) I have a very bad memory and b) what’s all this baby-led weaning?

Anyway I’ve trusted my instincts and this week have taken the plunge – Ellie’s 22 weeks and showing all the signs.  She looks totally deprived when we eat in front of her, she’s feeding more often and chewing on everything in sight.

Her first taste was the delightful baby rice (not impressed), followed by baby rice with pear on day 3 – that went down a treat.  I’ve just finished pureeing some carrots and feel very smug that they’re sat in the freezer ready! Unfortunately I’d forgotten how messy the whole thing is, (and that was just me with the blender), managing to spray carrot all over the kitchen and my hair..

So – baby led weaning (or BLW to those in the know) – I’ve ordered a book to see what all the fuss is about.  It sounds a great idea in principle; by waiting til babe is six months they’ll be ready to chew and be more co-ordinated, therefore they can pretty much eat most foods straight away. No pureeing necessary – fab!  Have any Mums out there tried this way of weaning?

I think this principle of letting them find their own way is great, but in practise I don’t think BLW in its purest form will work for me.  Mostly because I’m a Mum who worries, and I’ll worry that she’s not getting enough nutritional value.  And for me, it just seems a bit weird going from breastmilk to finger foods straight away – so I’ve decided to try a bit of both, which is probably a natural progession anyway.  We’ve started off on the purees  butI’ll also give her finger foods (like cooked broccoli) for her to chomp on when the family’s eating together. I don’t have much time to puree nowadays and it’ll be much easier when Ellie can join in the family meals and have a bit of ours.

And as for worrying about the mess, on a really bad day I can always put the high chair in the shower and hose it down..and baby.. and myself. :)

Eloise at 20 weeks..

And her thumb is in, hoorah!! (I’ll worry about how to get it out again in a few years).

Both my boys had a dummy but Ellie flatly refused, so after trying to soothe herself to sleep, (with a lot of crying), she found her thumb a few weeks ago – what a godsend!  Touch wood, she’s only waking once between 4am and 5am for a feed (after the 11pm dream feed), then back off again til about 6.30am.  I can’t wait til she sleeps through, though I know I’m lucky with only getting up once – I have complete sympathy to all those sleep-deprived Mums out there, it really is torture, having gone through it with both the boys.  (I guess I shouldn’t speak too soon..)

On the feeding front, Ellie is more and more fascinated and puzzled when we eat or drink, so I don’t think the next stage will be far off!  Bit sad really, as there’s no going back then.  The boys started on that revolting baby rice, carrot etc, but nowadays I hear it’s all about baby-led weaning – anyone tried this method?  Sounds a bit scarey to me..I’d love to hear any feedback from other Mums out there.

Bathtime is still a favourite and we now use a towelling bath support so that she can sit up slightly and be supported whilst having a good splash. I’ve found that big hooded towels are a must for catching slippery babies out of the bath too!

Ellie seems to like her cot now, as in the daytimes I’ve been putting her in there surrounded by cuddlies for a play.  But as the temperature keeps changing, so does the sleepwear!  With the warmer weather two weeks ago she was in a 1.0 tog Grobag for daytime naps, with a 2.5 tog Grobag at night with a lightweight sleepsuit.  Now it’s still a 2.5 tog Grobag at night but with two layers underneath.

With her ever-increasing dribble, the pile of muslins for the wash is ever-growing!   I like the Aden and Anais muslins due to their generous size (and also used by many a celeb!)  Maybe on my next update there might be a first tooth to report!  Not sure how I’ll feel about breastfeeding then..?

Our next challenge is planning what to pack for our summer holiday abroad; I don’t want to even think about excess baggage allowances!!

0.5 Tog Grobags for hotter weather

0.5 Tog Rated Grobags

The 0.5 Tog Grobag is the lightest weight version in the Gro Company range. This summer-weight Grobag is suitable for hot, sunny conditions within the UK and is essential if you are going abroad to sunnier countries for your holidays.

They are generally for use in the height of summer or on very warm Spring / Autumn nights. These Grobags are generally thinner and are cooler for the baby. They still come in the same exciting designs you’ve come to expect.

Ellie’s now 3 and a half months!

I have to keep pinching myself, my tiny baby is now a 3 month old and filling out every day!

So far, she’s cooing like crazy, reaching out for toys and constantly has something in her mouth! I didn’t think this  started so early, but I reckon she must have some teeth moving around under those gums – there’s a lot of dribble!

Ellie’s also gone from a crib into her big cot which was a bit scary (for me), although now she settles really well. Having a muslin and a comforter near her has really helped, as has swaddling. We gradually started swaddling her a bit less tightly, and at the moment I’m using a ‘SwaddleMe Graduate’ by Summer Infant.  It’s a zip up sleeping bag, with a swaddle wing that wraps arounds and attaches by velcro at the back, to help keep her arms in place.  In a few weeks we’ll pop her in a Grobag – no need for blankets and will keep her nice and snug.

As for sleeping, she was being a dream – having a bottle at 11pm then going through til about 5 or 6 am, but now she’s only managing til 4am… I’m hoping it will go back to how it was, but perhaps it’s a sign she’s ready for food?  She’s still only 15 weeks so it’s a bit early yet!  And daytime naps consist of three short power naps of 30 mins – so not much housework is getting done here! (shame).

To help with the bedtime I’ve got into the routine of giving her a bath every evening, around 6pm (which can be a bit manic with the other two boys tearing around the house), but she absolutely loves it and it gives her the signal that it’s jammies next and a bit of quiet time in her room.  I’m positive that starting her off with a Tummy Tub really helped the transition to the big bath, as she’s not afraid of the water at all.  I’ve also tried a bit of baby massage, only for a couple of minutes before she gets too tired and this seems to calm her down.

The time is going far too quick -  its such a cliche but I’m really treasuring these baby days, tiring as they are!  Before I know it she’ll be crawling next.  In the meantime, I’m off to buy some teething rings and bibs..
